Antique Victorian Tunbridge Ware Lap Desk by Henry Hollamby

A stunning Victorian rosewood Tunbridge ware writing lap desk c.1870. The intricate mosaic picture depicts Battle Abbey Gate House with flowers above and these are framed by a band of oak tree leaves. Unusually the sides of the writing lap desk are slightly concave and have a band of trailing leaves which extends all the way round the base of the lap desk. So as not to spoil the mosaic panels on the top of the lap desk the maker put the key escutcheon at the right-hand side of the box. The lift-up lid reveals a paid or brass topped inkwells, two stamp slopes, a removable pen tray and a lidded compartment for storing sealing waxes etc. The drop front lifts forwards to provide the writing slope and has a leather skiver which is decoratively tooled. It has a storage space under the lift-up flap. It measures 32cm. max wide x 26.5 max. deep x 8cm. high at the back and 5.5cm. high at the front. This writing desk is attributable to Henry Hollamby. Reference can be found in Tunbridge ware by Brian Austen plate 22. A truly stunning and highly decorative piece of Tunbridge ware.
